As the Boys Soccer Team’s season kicks off, there is a buzz of optimism surrounding the team, fueled by a blend of leadership, chemistry, and individual growth during the off season. With several players stepping up to contribute in meaningful ways, this season is bound to be one of the team’s most exciting in recent years.
Senior Alden Gentner is one of the team’s cornerstone players. He credits the team’s success to the strong chemistry between teammates. “We’re all friends on and off the field, which builds trust between us and makes communication easy during games. We know each other so well that we are able to capitalize on our strengths, making us a better team overall,” he said. Gentner has also played a pivotal role in supporting his teammates, especially during tough times. He said, “I just try to get them to focus on the positive aspects of the performance. This helps them build confidence and become better players.”
Senior Ryan Hacken echoed Gentner’s emphasis on the importance of a supportive environment, a view which he credits to his former captain. “One thing I learned from last year’s captain, Greg Zarraga, was respect. He always gave me positive encouragement when I was called up to varsity. This year, I try to give that same respect and encouragement to the younger players, making sure they feel part of the family,” he said. Hackens’ leadership approach, rooted in inclusivity and positivity, fosters an environment where every player’s unique skill set is celebrated on the field.
As a longtime player who has spent his fair share of time supporting his team on the field, Gentner reflects on the personal growth he has experienced. “Getting limited playing time can be beneficial for your game. It has driven me to become a solid player on my own, and it has made me respect the coaches and captains, which improves the overall team environment,” said Gentner.
This season, the team is particularly excited about the potential for a deeper playoff and CIF run. “Our schedule is easier than it’s been in years past,” Gentner explained. “We have a great squad, and I’m excited to see what we can achieve.”
A key factor in the team’s optimism is the chemistry shared by many of the starters, who have played together on the same club team. This year’s captain, Senior Silas Quirino, who has seen the team’s growth firsthand, believes this familiarity will make a significant difference. “One strength of the team is that most of the starters have already built up chemistry playing together on the same club team. This gives us an edge as we move into the high school season,” said Quirino.
As captain, Quirino is determined to keep his teammates motivated, especially when challenges arise. He said, “I try to support my teammates by giving them positive comments and encouraging them to play as well as they know they can. Before the game, I huddle the team up and try to get us pumped and excited to play.”
With a talented cohesive group led by passionate players, the UC High Boys Soccer Team is not just aiming to compete; they are determined to make this season one to remember. And with the leadership and spirit of the players, they are keen to do so. This team is ready to face any challenge that comes their way and push for success in the postseason.
