As the 2024 football season has come to an end, the University City Centurions have emerged as a remarkable success story, picking up from a challenging previous year and delivering a memorable fresh start. With a near perfect record of 10-2, the team has shown resilience, determination, and a commitment to the field, capturing the attention of the students and community members of UC High.
The Centurions’ offense has been a big standout this season, where they have consistently put impressive numbers on the scoreboard. The combination of ground game and dynamics has kept opposing defenses on edge. Kicker Senior Josh Kaplan emphasized the importance of preparation as they geared up for the CIF portion of their season.
He said, “We are going to prepare how we have been all year — watching film, practicing hard, and maintaining a positive mentality.” This commitment to preparation has been critical for the team, especially after tough games, where bouncing back has been essential to their success.
Defensively, the Centurions had proven to be a tough wall to break. With focusing on teamwork and discipline, the defense had effectively limited opposing offenses, forcing turnovers and making crucial stops at critical moments.
Cornerback and Wide Receiver Senior Jerré Hernandez stated one of his favorite moments of the season. He said, “I was blessed to be able to get an interception and a blocked field goal for my father. He had to go to the hospital that day and couldn’t make the game, so I’m glad I got to make some plays for him.”
Hernandez also pointed to a pivotal moment during practice that boosted team morale which seems to be a key part of their success. “One day, the team felt divided, and we had a conversation about how to improve. Since then, we’ve definitely seen a morale boost,” said Hernandez. This collective spirit had been a driving force in their ability to adapt and respond to challenges throughout the season.
A significant factor in the Centurions’ turnaround from last season’s struggles to this year’s successes can be attributed to a great team dynamic. Players have formed strong bonds both on and off the field, which has translated into better communication and trust during games.
Hernandez said, “The team chemistry has evolved pretty well this year. We made sure to get everyone on the same page, not only on the football field but outside of it too.” This friendship had been evident in their performance, as players relied on each other in high-pressure situations. “Just bet on yourself and know that God has you and he has you there for a reason,” said Hernandez.
The atmosphere at home games will be remembered to have been electric, as students and families filled the stands to support their team. This community backing truly played a significant role in strengthening team morale and forming a sense of unity both on the field and in the stands. The energy from the crowd was a motivating factor for the team, inspiring them to give their all in every game.
Linebacker Sophomore Tucker Wojdowski echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of maintaining a strong team culture. He said, “When the whole team is working hard and bought in, we know we can win in the League and go far in [CIF] playoffs.”
Reflecting on their favorite moments, players shared how specific games left a lasting impression. Kaplan highlighted his first touchback during the Brawley game, an achievement he had been working to, from the beginning of his career. “It was a personal milestone for me, and the support from my teammates had made it even more special,” he said.
As the Centurions looked ahead to the CIF, their focus remained on building their successes. Saying before playoffs, “Our hopes for the playoffs are to win it all and go on to state,” Hernandez said. Both he and Kaplan emphasized the importance of maintaining their momentum by focusing on one game at a time and executing their individual roles effectively. “Staying inside our ‘bubble,’ as Coach Lawrence says, and keeping the energy up at practice will help us win League and go far in playoffs,” said Wojdowski, underscoring the significance of their training and preparation, as well as mental preparedness.
The 2024 season was a testament to hard work, perseverance, and community spirit. With the foundation laid for continued success, the University City Centurions Football Team was bound to carry this momentum into the future. As they finished the season at CIF Semifinals, their dedication and commitment showed throughout the season that they have not only built a strong team this year, but fostered a lasting legacy that will inspire future generations of players.
