Working hard since her freshman year, Senior Isa Neri has put all her effort into playing for UC High’s Girls Golf Team. Now heading into her senior year, she confidently stands out as one of the team’s captains, ready for action.
Neri has a myriad of accomplishments, from winning MVP of the team her freshman year, to contributing towards the team’s victory in the League these past three years. She has also been able to balance her daily life with golf, maintaining straight A’s, and even being involved in the school’s theater program.
With the support of her dad, she got to know the ropes of the sport at 13
years old. She said, “My dad has been playing golf for many years, but both my parents wanted me to play the sport. Although in the beginning I didn’t find interest in the sport, I kept at it, until eventually, I found joy in playing.” She also said that she finds inspiration from her dad, and hopes to one day be able to beat him in a match.
Neri also said she really enjoys playing prestigious courses like Torrey Pines, but that in the grand scheme of things, she simply wants to play.
Coach Gail Hall said, “She has been on the team for three years, and I can say that she has really grown into a great golfer, not to mention one who takes pride in her team. What stands out about her is her competitive nature. She wants to win and encourage the team.”
Hall also said, “When Isa hits that drive, she is the longest hitter on the team.” Neri said, “I am able to hit the ball really far. That’s probably because I used to play soft- ball, but I still find I perform a little worse with my short game, something I hope to improve on by going to practice.”
In terms of leadership, Co-Captain Tino Feremenga said, “Isa is a great leader. She always keeps everyone informed, is a great co-captain, and her collaborative skills are very valuable. She has improved greatly over the years; at the beginning of this journey it was rough, but I believe that she has gained the skills to make it far this year. She has learned to man- age her emotions and become more competitive, which has led her to more points.”
Neri said, “I feel at my best performing when I’ve had a long day at school, and I’m just out there, having fun. I think being calm in general is how I play the best.” She added, “I do want to do better than I did last year, but also to leave behind a team who is strong enough to win the League again. I want my team to improve, but also have fun and find joy in playing golf.”
Feremenga said, “As a teammate, Isa has lots of integrity which comes with her competitiveness, but there is also her dedication to keeping her team in order.” Senior Jazmine Mora added, “Isa is a great leader. She makes sure that everything goes according to plan, and whenever our coach is not able to, she steps up.” Hall said, “Winning back-to-back championships was one of the most memorable moments for the team.” Neri said, “I hope to leave my legacy behind and most importantly I hope to go out with a bang.”
Neri has many talents, has achieved great accomplishments, and is truly sincere. One thing is for sure, she was certainly born to be a leader and guide her team to victory.
