The Girls Volleyball Team at UC High is on quite the roll with an overall score of 17 wins to 5 losses, and have moved onto matches in Division 2 League play. Even with tough competition on the horizon, they look to win every point and match to come.
“The girls volleyball community is fantastic. Our Captains Middle Blocker Ellasyn Scuba and Outside Hitter Danielle Muttera are both great leaders and outstanding players,” said Varsity Girls Volleyball Coach Aaron Hartin.
“Some of our young players are starting to have a huge impact, those being Outside Hitter Logan Whittle and Setter Reagan Rowe. Cassie Lewis-Mussa, Leah Bledsoe, and Gabriela Conway also make a huge impact,” said Hartin.
Hartin said, “Our X factor is Libero Amanda Guzman (one of the top in her position in the county). It is worth coming to a match just to see Amanda play.”
Muttera said, “Volleyball is a very competitive sport and has a big presence at UC High. The hard work we put in is one of our strong points and it is very important to our performance.”
Hartin said, “The players are some of the top athletes in the school, and though they are competitive and demand a lot from their coaches and peers, they are also a lot of fun. The athletes at UC High are such nice people and I really enjoy helping them get stronger as both athletes and as people.”
“My favorite part of coaching is just being on a high school campus and being a part of that culture,” said Hartin.
Muttera said, “The girls volleyball program is amazing. We are team oriented and focused on improving and learning from our mistakes. We want to make sure that our team feels comfortable and supported by our teammates, and I cannot stress that enough because it is crucial when it comes to growing together as a team.”
Adjusting to the role of captain, Murreta has faced her own challenges. She said, “Being a leader is a new experience to me, but I am learning how to become better day by day. There is room for improvement on our team, but I know we have so much potential to do great things in the future.”
“Stress comes at the end of the season when a loss means the season is over. It is always tough to say goodbye to a group of seniors that have been with the program for four years,” said Hartin.
“Mental toughness would be my biggest goal as a team captain and a player,” said Muttera.
Of course, no one said that being involved in a sport would be a breeze. Whittle said, “The main sacrifice I make for volleyball is time, as it’s hard to juggle both the sport and homework.”
Muttera said, “I look forward to our upcoming League season because our team gets to grow together and learn from experiences.”
Whittle also has ambitions. She said, “This season has been exciting and I am hopeful for the rest of the season. My goal for the season is to play long into the CIFs.”
