The girls flag football season has started off strong at UC High with numerous wins and enthusiastic players. Officially becoming a CIF sport in 2023, it is astonishing how much the team has grown in both skill and popularity within such a short period of time. The team’s record so far is four wins to six losses, but they are anticipating many more victories as the season goes on.
Junior Avi Schorr, who plays safety and slot receiver, is looking forward to the upcoming games this season. “I’m excited for this season. I hope that we win the CIF playoffs and do well in the future,” said Schorr.
Sophomore Chloe Holguin, who leads the team in tackles, has big goals for this season. “I want to win all of our future games,” she said. As one of the best defenders on the team, she is very optimistic about the team’s upcoming games.
Another key to the team’s success is their star player Junior Courtlyn Mitchell who commutes all the way from Mt. Everest Academy to play Flag Football at UC High. “She’s the best player on our team, she leads us in almost everything,” said Sophomore Aaliyah Segura. Mitchell leads the team in rushing yards, touchdowns, and interceptions.
While competitive, UC High’s Flag Football Team is nonetheless a very fun program to be a part of. “My favorite aspect of Flag Football is spending time with my team. We have really good energy,” said Holguin. “I love when our team scores touchdowns, because we hype each other up on and off the field,” said Schorr. She said that the team has spirit and passion for the game, which contributes to their success.
The team does face some challenges though. Because the sport is new to UC, the players are still getting the hang of how to play. “We practice for two hours each day,” said Captain Senior Ava Ayles. This daily practice has helped the team improve their skills, despite the sport being so new to them.
Thanks to Flag Football Coach Brian Josten it is extremely easy for the players to balance their sport and schooling. “Our coach makes it very nice. If we have to do something for school he just lets us do it,” said Schorr.
The players have learned countless skills from flag football. “Playing flag football taught me how to turn, spin, and how to turn my hips,” said Segura. When playing running back, players use these moves often during games.
Junior Kami DeMara said, “Flag football provides a really great opportunity for students at UC High. Definitely join. You get to know more people and make friends…. Flag football at UC is fun, fierce and competitive.”
