Gillum Gears Up for Success
January 24, 2020
Senior Sidney Gillum kicks off her last season of UC High Soccer playing the pivotal role of Center Midfielder. With Gillum’s hard work and fantastic work ethic, she expects to end the season with lots of wins and unforgettable memories.
Gillum, following in her older sister’s footsteps, first started playing soccer when she was six years old. “I started playing soccer because of my older sister, and I soon fell in love with the game,” said Gillum. “I really enjoy the competitiveness,” she continued.
Head Coach Jason Donlon explained how Gillum’s passion and competitiveness allow her to be a star player. “Sidney is a great player and teammate due to her hard work, trustworthiness, and loyalty. She can read and understand the game very well. She plays with the aggression of someone twice her size and can lead on and off the field,” said Donlon.
Gillum also makes an impact by encouraging the team. Gillum explained that she can help lead her team to victory by setting a good example at practice and staying positive during games. Senior Mimi Olney said, “Sidney motivates the team with her hard work and pushes the team to always be better. She also creates a positive environment during practice and games.”
She is hopeful that with the right motivation her team can win a championship this year. “Personally, I strive to be the best that I can be each and every day. If every one of us adopts this mindset, it will allow our team to have an opportunity to win the championship,” explained Gillum.
Junior Gaby Bruce explained that Gillum’s work ethic has always encouraged the team to strive to do their best. “Sidney loves to have fun while we play and she is a great teammate to laugh and smile with. She encourages the team to work to the best of our ability and to reach for our goals. Having a teammate like her, the team plays up to their full potential,” said Bruce.
Olney explained that, over the past few years, Gillum has been an amazing teammate. “She always does a lot for the team: organizing team bonding events, taking charge in warmups, and maintaining a positive and fun attitude.”
“The moment Sidney walked through the door, I knew she was someone special. As a coach, I saw that Sidney had that athletic quality which is needed to be a great player. Our team says “Carpe diem,” which translates to “Seize the day,” and means to always push yourself, which I can proudly say Sidney always does. Watching her over the years, I can see the progress she has made. She seizes every moment and that is what makes her a special player,” said Donlon.
Being a captain comes with many responsibilities. Gillum stated that at times it can be challenging to perform many of the tasks that come with being a leader, but she loves that she has the opportunity to do what she does. There is no doubt in anyone’s mind that Sidney will leave a lasting impact on the UC High Girls Soccer Program for years to come.
