With their rubber balls and mesh-strung sticks, UC High’s Boys Lacrosse Team plans to pick up their game for the rest of the 2011-2012 spring season.
Winning half of their games so far, Midfielder Isaac Manoff revealed the team’s current standings to be 3-3. “We still have had great games, like beating Monte Vista High School,” said Manoff, “because they were a team we lost to last year, so it was nice to beat them this season.”
Defense Player Adrian Trevizo also stated that despite winning only half the games, the ones that they have won were more than successful. “I have to say our best game was against Montgomery High School. We won the game by over ten points,” said Trevizo.
The team’s strengths are their preparation and training. Acting as a team leader, Manoff leads the stretches at practices and before games. He said, “We practice every day after school. We do a lot of drills that help us improve our stick work.” Drills like the 6-on-6 ground ball drills are one of the many techniques that make them overall better lacrosse players.
Their hard work in training keeps the team confident, but the lack of support from the school is hurting them. “We have no funding or field space. Last year we used the upper field for practice and home games,” Manoff said, “but this year, the school said that the upper fields are too unsafe to use.” Other UC sports teams still uses the upper field for their practices, but the Boys Lacrosse Team now practices at Doyle Elementary School, and has their home games at La Jolla High School.
Former Coach Bernard Steinberger gave his position over to Coach Javier Luna last year, but he still has hopes for the team to thrive and succeed. Steinberger said, “Coaching for three years, I was heavily invested in the program, so I am glad to see that Coach Javier and the team are continuing on. It is a great sport, near to my heart, and I love seeing our boys work hard and win.”
