The seniors dominated the 2012 Powderpuff football game with a 19-0 shutout. The senior’s strong defense was too much for the junior’s offense.
One of the game’s biggest controversies was the location. The game couldn’t be played on the new football field because it is not yet finished. So the game was played on the upper field, which is torn up and worn down.
The Powderpuff game has become one of the favorite events for UC High students. The seniors versus juniors rivalry is one that is settled on the field, where the girls and boys switch positions. Traditionally, the girls play football, while the boys become the team’s cheerleaders. However, this year there were no volunteer cheerleaders so the only guy participation was the coaching.
According to Senior Chris Lee, the key players of the game were Senior Macky Forgey and Junior Payton Agnew. Agnew had three interceptions and Forgey scored all of the senior class’s touchdowns.
There will be a Powderpuff All-Star game on April 15. The team will have 15 seniors and 10 players from the other classes. The team will play Mira Mesa on the new field.
The rivalry sometimes escalates to extreme situations, with fan arguments and players yelling at refs and other players. Teacher Austin Mason was last year’s referee but had to drop out because of the game’s intensity. The referees this year were Cross Country Coach Jim McCarthy and Math Teacher John Fiorentino. McCarthy said, “It sounded like fun and I had the time to do it.” Lee said, “McCarthy did a great job, but Fiorentino was the real star.”
Disagreements between ASB’s Sports Commissioners and administration caused the game to be delayed multiple times, according to Lee and Senior Dustin Bagalini.
The coaches for the Senior Girls Powderpuff Team were Seniors Jordan Green, Demar Jackson, Andrew Navarro, and Josh Gonzalez. The coaches for the Junior Powderpuff Team were Juniors Reggie Wilson, Nico Jacobo, Anthony Tabiendo, and Abraham Jimenez. Difficulties also included the date of the game being changed so many times that it made it difficult for the two teams to schedule practices.
