Though their record isn’t what they expected, the Girls Varsity Tennis Team competed well in one of the toughest leagues in San Diego.
UC tennis competes in a league with Cathedral Catholic High, Our Lady of Peace Academy, La Jolla High School, and Scripps Ranch High School. The toughest matches were against Cathedral, according to Head Coach Bonnie Newmark.
Despite a season with a winless league record, the Girls Tennis Team had big wins against Point Loma High School and San Diego High School. Their biggest win was against San Diego when the Centurions outlasted the Cavers 12-6. Beating Point Loma at home was the highlight of the season, according to Newmark. Junior Ashley Conte said, “The most important game was against Cathedral because they are the hardest in league.”
The problem with creating team unity is the number of beginners. Newmark said, “It’s hard to adjust with a team that is changing every year.” According to Newmark, there are people at UC who can play but are scared to tryout.
Conte said, “Sofija Kostic made the most impact on the team this season.” According to Newmark, the doubles duo with the most impact was Junior Brooke Mallory and Senior Zoe Hedley. Mallory and Hedley won the most double matches on the team.
Though the record may not reflect it, the team had a fun time and expects to improve next season because of the newfound experience. Conte said, “We all got along so well together and I had fun spending time with the team.”
