A new rubberized track and Astroturf field is scheduled to be completed at University City High School by March of 2012. The new stadium renovations are a result of voter-approved Proposition S, which states that, “The mission of the Facilities Planning and Construction (FPC) Division is to design and construct clean, safe, environmentally friendly facilities that encourage successful teaching and learning,” according to San Diego Unified School District’s website (sandi.net).
According to Principal Jeff Olivero, the company in charge of the construction of the new stadium renovations is Field Turf.
Although the original date to begin renovations was scheduled for August 1, 2011, the process was delayed. This delay was due to manhole and sewage problems that made it difficult for the trucks on the south side of the stadium, according to Olivero.
The big question for many students is: “Will the track be ready for the 2012 Track and Field season.” According to Olivero, the challenges they’re facing are the lights on the south side of the stadium. Installation of the lights requires a truck that would be harmful to the rubberized track. Installing the lights before the field construction is not possible because the permit needed for the light installation has not yet been issued.
Sophomore Ian St. Louis said, “I think it [the renovations] will make our school more motivated about games, like it’s something to be proud of.”
Future plans for renovations to the upper field are also part of the use of the Proposition S funding. According to Olivero, the upper field’s renovations will begin after the stadium construction is finished.
According to Olivero, depending on the budget, there are plans to rebuild the entrance to the stadium. There have been architectural drawings for plans to change the two entrances into one entrance.
