The annual juniors versus seniors Powderpuff football game will occur on April 12, at which time junior and senior girls compete in a flag football game coached by junior and senior boys football players.
Junior Hayden Goldstein said, “I am super excited, because I’ve always been interested ever since I was a freshman watching the Powderpuff game. I think it’s going to be super fun!”
“Our [team’s] energy and spirit have been really great. We’re all super close, and that makes it even better. We have a competitive mindset and work hard at every practice,” said Goldstein.
Senior Quarterback Julia Dreiling said, “I’m really excited. It’s one of our last big events as seniors, so it’s a chance for us to come together before we all go our separate ways. Going into junior year, no one [on the team had] really played flag football before. Now, I understand the game a little better, and I think that’s going to help,” Dreiling explained.
Powderpuff Senior Coach Jerre Hernandez said, “Some of the biggest strengths I’m looking for are people that have hands and are fast because if you have that, we are going to take the defense over the top every time.”
“We made changes [with the team], and the Junior Class won’t see them coming,” Hernandez said. “In practice, we emphasize stopping their so-called ‘star players’ so during the game we know they won’t be doing anything,” he added.
“It’s just fun. The dynamics [between juniors and seniors] makes it more fun. Last year, we would be practicing on the same field and we kind of were going off on each other during practices. It just made it more competitive, which kind of helps your adrenaline during the game.”
The seniors are going for the jugular. Hernandez explained, “My players are going to talk all the trash in the world.”
“Powderpuff is such a fun thing to do. We love going to football games in the fall, but honestly, playing in this game is even more fun. It’s fun to take on the juniors and beat them. Make them taste defeat,” Dreiling said.
“I hope they learn how to play some football and get some great celebrations out of this, and we’re not losing,” said Hernandez.
Dreiling’s ultimate goal? “The W. To get the win. Just coming together as a team and getting that big dub,” she explained.
