On Wednesday, October 30, ASB will be hosting their annual Spooky Night in the UC High quad and is inviting all UC cluster students, from elementary to high school, to help bring the community together.
ASB Co-Advisor Justin Nguyen said that ASB is still planning the different activities that will be at Spooky Night. They plan on having coloring, games, food, and a variety of other activities that will depend on which clubs choose to participate.
According to Nguyen, the more clubs that participate, the more activities there will be, and that the event will be open to students of all ages along with their parents.
ASB Community Outreach Lead Senior Kathy Mai said, “There will be lots of games, and a haunted hallway, which is always very fun. It’s something that the kids really seem to like. Last year was the first year that we had Spooky Night, and in my opinion it had a very big turnout.”
Mai said that students should dress up in costumes for the opportunity to win the costume contest at the event. She said, “Students should come to Spooky Night, because it is a chance for you to get out of your bubble a little bit, and there will be lots of candy.”
ASB Roman Legion Member Junior Chris Mandrell said that ASB hosts Spooky Night because they want to give UC High’s future students something to look forward to, and hopefully get them excited to attend UC High.
“We host Spooky Night because we want to create a stronger community within the UC cluster, and wish to continue building our relationship with the community,” said Nguyen.
“Students should attend Spooky Night because it is a huge community event. We will have a lot of games, food, and activities that will be fun,” said Nguyen.
“Setting up is always a little tough but it is definitely worth it in the end when you get to see the outcome of it all,” said Mai.
“Students should come to Spooky Night because it’s a good opportunity to get closer to all your classmates, make some new friends, and have a good time. It’s a night to celebrate Halloween a bit early with your current and future classmates,” said Mandrell.
Mandrell said that an event like this would be a great opportunity to make friends, because one will be surrounded by people that go to schools in their area, classmates that they will be with until graduation, and students that will be attending UC High in future years.
According to the National Institute of Health, “Establishing close friendships marks a significant developmental milestone during adolescence. Doing so enables people to gain a deeper understanding of others and themselves through private, open, and vulnerable interactions. According to studies conducted in middle and high schools, most students grow a ‘wider circle’ of intricate, varied, intermediate social links with their peers during adolescence. This occurs both within and outside of the classroom” (ncbi.nlm.nih.gov).
Senior Noah Nordstrand, Head of Outreach for the UCHS Robotics Team, shared his views on the subject. “I was really drawn to Spooky Night because it seemed like a really fun fundraiser, because we are building our own carnival game. It is also really appealed to me because it is a great opportunity to make something fun for the community,” he said.
“It’s a very convenient event [for the team], because it is at school, after school, and it isn’t on Halloween, so you don’t have to sacrifice your Halloween night to be there,” said Nordstrand. He said that the team is working on a real electronic basketball arcade game, where contestants will try to get as many baskets as they can in a limited amount of time.
