The UC High Boys Baseball Team got the privilege to play at San Diego’s Petco Park on April 22 against Lincoln High School, winning six to zero.
The team started the game strong, having a few bumps along the way, but finishing on top. The highlight of the game was when Junior Josh Kaplan hit an home run, racking in three points and hitting the ball into the stands during the first inning of the game.
Many UC High staff and students got the opportunity to attend this game and support the baseball team. English Teacher and Head Baseball Coach Richard Frink said, “First and foremost I applaud the administration and ASB for stepping up and giving us the opportunity to play at Petco Park. We got this chance because of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), which offers high schools around the county the opportunity to play at Petco Park annually. We went through a selection process where we put our name in the hat, and luckily we got selected.”
Senior Captain Garret Gillum said, “Admin supported the idea and pushed forward for us to be allowed to play at Petco.” Before the game began, Senior Captain Jack Clark said, “I hope that we play well and also win. It’s going to be a really good experience for the whole team, and it’s fun for everyone to play at a major league stadium. I have always been a Padres fan, and I’m excited to play where one of my favorite MLB teams plays.”
Gillum said, “I was really excited to play at the field. We created a lot of memories. It was really one of the best times I’ve had with the team, and we have been really close this year. I hope to leave the drive and dedication that this team has for the next season’s team.”
Frink said, “First and foremost, the reason I’m here is for the players. I hope they continue to get better, work hard, fix their deficiencies, and work as a team. This might not be the last chance we have to play at Petco in the next few years.”
