The Student Wellness Education and Resources (S.W.E.A.R.) Committee is a student-led group of representatives who want to de-stigmatize the topic of mental health as a whole and provide more resources for students across the district, with the UC High chapter meeting every other Wednesday at lunch in Room 213.
Vice Chair Junior Tara Djordjevic said, “The board is comprised of student representatives from high school and middle schools across the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD).”
“Although S.W.E.A.R. isn’t only directed to UC High, we’ve recently started a club that talks about the S.W.E.A.R. committee’s goals and different mental health resources that we want to implement at school,” said Communications Liaison Junior Green Schneider.
“We work to implement solutions and projects into each school to create safe spaces where students can go,” said Junior Shaira Chowdhury, the Co-President of the S.W.E.A.R. Club at UC High.
“The UC High S.W.E.A.R. members have collaborated with organizations like UCSD [University of California, San Diego] Medical School and Key Club for projects like presenting student-made mental health artwork or creating gift bags for children in hospitals,” said Schneider.
“We are currently sponsoring a mental health first aid training provided by Mental Health America in May. The training will be provided to SDUSD students and families at no cost,” said Djordjevic.
Schneider added, “Tara, two other juniors in the program, and I presented our work on the resolution to the School Board back on April 30, trying to get the resolution passed and hopefully get funding for the project. There’s a lot more information available at our website that you can find by searching up ‘SWEAR committee.’”
