Senior High Financial Clerk Lucila Alonzo is waving goodbye to the University City Community this month, closing off almost a decade of work in the area.
Alonzo began her work with UC High in 2014 as a “…two hour food service worker at the UC cluster schools,” as per Alonzo. She became a school clerk for UC High in 2016 and started as Senior High Financial Clerk the following year.
Administrative Assistant Marie Byrd said, “Lucy has always been very kind, professional, and helpful. She has always been willing to help out, learn new things, and take on new responsibilities if needed. She has been an absolute joy to work with.”
“She’s the best we’ve ever had. I found out she does more than what other financial secretaries do. It’s going be hard to fill her job,” said Office Secretary Norma Smith, who has known Alonzo since she first started at UC High.
Smith added, “She grew a lot learning finance, so other finance secretaries will always call to ask her for information on how to do different procedures.”
“UC High has a great dream team, from administrators, counselors, teachers, custodial staff, school staff, food service staff, and coaches. We are like a puzzle, all having our own differently shaped piece and together form a great picture of the school,” said Alonzo.
Byrd said, “I’ve really enjoyed working with her at football games… We’ve spent a lot of time together at the ticket office booth selling tickets and counting money. We’ve just had a wonderful working relationship.”
Byrd added, “She’s very easygoing and extremely knowledgeable. She is one of, if not the best financial clerk in the district. She really knows her stuff.”
With finances playing a role in many sectors of the school, Alonzo’s responsibilities include, “…to give guidance and support to the ASB Council and club, prepare reports on sales taxes, process purchase orders and invoices, sell and direct the sale of items related to school activities, and reconcile monthly ASB checking account bank statements,” said Alonzo. She also assists in maintaining and monitoring the school’s supply budget.
Alonzo’s departure has become a bittersweet moment for many staff members, including Smith. She said, “I’ll miss her presence most. We’ve shared a lot of moments together.”
Alonzo concluded, “UC High has been my second home for more than seven years. I will miss all of you, administrators, staff, students, and the UC community. I had a great time and am proud to be a Centurion.”

I remember you, Lucy! We worked together at the USPS office in La Mesa @ the “Grossmont Station”! I decided to retire after my first grandson was born—(I wanted to be available to care for him when his mother had to return to work post her “maternity leave”!). I now have “4” grandkids that I’m caring for—ages “8”, “6”, “4”, and “2”! (My only regret was not giving myself enough time to say “goodbye” to my regular customers @ Grossmont!). Take care, my friend; ‘Hope all is well with you!
