This school year, UC High’s football stadium was remodeled, and both staff and students have wondered what the first event to be held there would be. Recently, Principal Jeff Olivero confirmed that graduation will definitely be held on the new field. However, there is a seating issue that wasn’t anticipated.
Since the time of the original construction of the stadium, building code has changed. The new rules regarding the ingress and egress of the stairs means that part of the visitor’s side of the bleachers no longer meets code, has had to be blocked off, and cannot be used. This new circumstance means that 500 of the seats can no longer be used. According to Olivero, this means seniors may be receiving five graduation tickets instead of the six that they received in the past.
Many seniors with large families are concerned that they will have to inform family members that they will not be able to attend. Senior Meghan Shaw said, “A lot of us seniors have really large families that are very close. I can’t believe that we may expected to tell our aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives that they cannot see us graduate.”
Some students were counting on six tickets and had invited guests accordingly. “I have friends and family that will be devastated if I have to tell them that they can’t see me graduate. I was worried about the six tickets, but five just simply will not work,” said Senior Gabriela Bermudez.
