The upcoming UC High Pep Rally will take place on February 3 and will incorporate a Harry Potter theme.
The four grades have been assigned different “Hogwarts Houses,” which are the different groups that students in Harry Potter’s school are divided into in the book series by J.K. Rowling. Freshmen are in Ravenclaw House, sophomores are in Hufflepuff, juniors are in Slytherin, and seniors are in Gryffindor, according to ASB Officer Shannon Smith.
“Students are expected to wear colors that match their Harry Potter House to add to the theme of the rally. [The colors] are very close to their class colors from last year,” said Smith. Freshmen are encouraged to wear blue, sophmores yellow, juniors green, and seniors red.
ASB has also planned a Quidditch game to go along with the concept of the pep rally, as it is a sport that is played by characters in the Harry Potter series. “We have a Quidditch game scheduled for the winter sport captains. We couldn’t fit very many games with all the performances and clubs,” said Smith.
Smith is hopeful that the pep rally will be received positively by the school due to the fact that the students themselves voted for the Harry Potter theme. “The majority of the school picked this theme with the surveys we sent out to randomly selected classes. My partner and I believe the theme worked out really well,” said Smith
Students around the school seem generally pleased with the prospect of the Harry Potter-themed pep rally. “I think it’s a really great way to change the way we usually do pep rallies. Plus, I really like Harry Potter, so I think it’ll be a fun change!” said Junior Karen Sandoval.
“I don’t like that the juniors got Slytherin though. They’re the bad guys, so that sucks,” said Sandoval. Nevertheless, she still plans to wear Slytherin House’s colors to show spirit for her class. “Even though I don’t like Slytherin, I’ll still wear the colors to support my house. Plus the colors aren’t that bad, they’re actually kind of nice,” added Sandoval.
