Campus Police Officer Luis Espinoza replaced Officer Larry Woods as UC High’s on-campus police officer this school year. Woods left the school for other duties. At the moment, Espinoza is on a temporary transfer to the southern part of the city due to budget constraints and personnel issues. He said, “I look forward to coming back soon, so I can continue working closely with the school’s administration on projects such as bullying and traffic concerns.”
Espinoza has been working as a community service officer for the past 14 years and as a police officer for the last seven of those years. “I am what we call homegrown. My entire career has been dedicated to the school district,” said Espinoza.
Before transferring, he worked at Bell Middle School. During his last year, he discussed the possibility of moving to UC High with his supervisor. Espinoza said, “I had heard really good things about this community, and I was eager to have the chance to bring my style of community service here.”
According to Math Teacher Tracy Lynn, Espinoza’s goals to ensure safety at the school have been met so far. She explained, “I like him because he is very visible. He is always roaming around in the morning, he is in the parking lot during lunch, and he keeps students in check.”
Senior Chelsea Lacy has known Woods since freshman year. She said, “It’s sad to see that Officer Woods had to leave, but Officer Espinoza seems to be doing a good job so far this year, and I hope he sticks around.”
