The first dance of the year, Homecoming, will be a “Blackout” in the UC High gymnasium on October 29, for UCHS students of all grades to enjoy.
With Homecoming themes being reminiscent of one another for the past few years, ASB has taken a different approach with this year’s Homecoming, having “Blackout” as this year’s theme. The gym will be filled with glow-in-the-dark chairs, neon lights, glow sticks, and much more, according to Junior Class President Marcus Dearing.
According to Dearing, ASB chose this theme due to the recent September 9 blackout. Students were using candles, flashlights, and other lighting during the blackout, which prompted the idea for a similar energy during Homecoming. Because of the unique theme, Dearing believes Homecoming this year is going to be much livelier. “I think the dance will be more energetic this year. The different colored lights will add to the excitement,” said Dearing.
Lights and glow-in-the-dark paraphernalia are simply supporting the main attraction of Homecoming – -the dancing. As usual, there are restrictions on the types of dancing that are not permitted. Freaking, moshing, and grinding are a few of the styles of dancing that are not tolerated, according to the UCHS Student/Parent Handbook (sandi.net).
Breaking a dancing violation has its consequences, regardless of how students feel about the rules. According to ASB Teacher Donna Fallon, the first offense is punishable by time in the “time-out” room at the dance. Students only get three chances, and the third gets them pulled from the dance.
Junior Andy Gonzalez has no issues with the enforced rules, but rather agrees with them. “The dancing restrictions don’t bother me, because it’s not normal to dance like that,” said Gonzalez.
Although some, like Gonzalez, are not bothered by the restrictions, many are. Sophomore Alyssa Medina said, “I understand how the dancing is inappropriate, but the adults need to understand that that’s how mostly everyone dances these days. But I’m still really excited, I can’t wait!”
