While it might not immediately seem like something that unites us, you might be surprised to learn that scientific events, such as the upcoming solar eclipse on March 29, have the unique ability to bridge gaps between countries and individuals. Regardless of background or belief, people from all over the world will come together to witness this awe-inspiring phenomenon, reminding us that the wonders of the universe can connect us in ways that transcend our differences.

   While there are various types of eclipses, the upcoming one is a solar eclipse. Solar eclipses occur when the moon passes between the Earth and Sun, blocking sunlight from reaching Earth. The most thrilling ones are those that completely block the sun, resulting in a few moments of total darkness during the day. However, on March 29, the Earth will only experience a partial solar eclipse, visible in parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas (science.nasa.gov).

   Due to the rare occurrence of solar eclipses, they have become an exciting topic and event for not only the public, but also for scientists as they offer unique opportunities for research. According to NASA, solar eclipse makes it possible for scientists to see part of the sun’s atmosphere, known as the corona. Normally, it is too faint to see except when the bright light of the sun is blocked. Studying the corona helps scientists understand how the sun functions as a star, predict space weather that can affect the Earth, gain insights into the behavior of other stars, and potentially identify conditions that could support life on distant planets (science.nasa.gov).

   Solar eclipses have been occurring for thousands of years, each one bringing new information and excitement for future events into our world. However, the most beautiful thing about the eclipse is its ability to bring people from all different walks of life together. Physics Teacher Scott Estrada said, “It’s amazing that a ‘small’ body like the Moon can block the Sun and cast a shadow on Earth. I think it gives us a sense of the scale of our solar system. For a few moments, we can put on some cool eclipse glasses and look at something together. It gives us a shared experience to connect with people, especially these days when we seem to be so isolated.” Solar eclipses generate a sense of wonder and excitement, captivating people’s attention regardless of where they are.

   Throughout history, various cultures have interpreted eclipses in unique ways, often seeing them as powerful omens, signs from the gods, or moments of cosmic significance, according to the Britannica website. These diverse beliefs reflect the awe that eclipses inspire, uniting people across time and space in a shared experience of marveling at the mysteries of the universe (britannica.com).

   In 2024, there were a total of two solar eclipses, one total and one annular. In California, we were fortunate to experience the total solar eclipse that occurred on April 8. To celebrate this rare event, many places in San Diego held viewing parties, while schools organized activities to educate students about the science behind the eclipse, as well as how to safely view it. By hosting these events, San Diego not only celebrated the eclipse but also encouraged curiosity and learning, making it a memorable and meaningful occasion for the community (nbcsandiego.com).

   Solar eclipses have long been events that unite people across the globe, regardless of cultural or national differences. They serve as a powerful reminder of how small we are in the vast expanse of the universe.
