Senior Áine Govil is UC High’s Associated Student Body (ASB) President for the 2023-2024 school year. Govil has been in ASB for two years, and it is now her time to shine as President. Behold, the Top 10 must-know facts about UC High’s ASB President.
10) Dream Job – Govil’s dream job is to be a public policy administrator for a federal agency in the United States, such as the Department of Justice or Department of Homeland Security. After she graduates, she hopes to attend a four year university in California to get her undergraduate degree in sociology and public policy before moving on to a graduate school.
9) Fears – Something people would never guess from looking at Govil is that she is wildly afraid of birds. “I’m sorry to all my bird lovers out there but wow, do those creatures freak me out. When I was six, I cried at the zoo because a bird took my sandwich clean out of my hands… I never recovered from that,” said Govil.
8) Music – Listening to music is an amazing way to decompress and enjoy free time. As for Govil, she has recently been into the Afrobeats music genre, and listens to artists like Libianca, Tems, and Tyla on repeat. Her all-time favorite album is Garbage’s 1995 Album, a stark contrast to her current taste, but nonetheless, a classic.
7) Passion – Govil is extremely passionate about public affairs and issues. Whether it relates to reproductive rights, voter education, the LGBTQ+ community, climate change, blood cancer fundraisers, or walkouts for racial equality, she will always be there to support her community and root for the underdog.
6) Challenges – The hardest challenge that Govil has had to overcome is the concept of change. Learning to grow up alongside her friends and dealing with new issues and relationships has been quite the journey for her. Her best piece of advice is to make time for the people you care about. High school flies by quite fast, but it’s okay to stop and enjoy your experience as it happens.
5) Journey – Govil’s journey with ASB began as she finished her sophomore year, although joining the group has always been on the docket for her. 4) Hobbies – Govil absolutely loves reading. She’s currently in the middle of reading Equus by Author Peter Shaffer, and she doesn’t think she has ever been more freaked out, yet simultaneously interested, by a piece of literature. Govil said, “Thank you to Mrs. Huszar for the recommendation!”
3) Reflection – Govil believes her ten- year-old self would be appalled by the idea of directing her first pep rally for UC High, let alone during the first week of school, but she believes she would be proud of the work her present counterpart is doing, and, according to her, “…glad that [she] stopped brushing [her] curls out.”
2) Perfect day – Govil’s perfect day would begin with an early morning hike, followed by brunch and coffee at the Living Room Coffee House in La Jolla. She would have an afternoon of productivity, and end with a concert/outing with friends in the evening. All of her favorite days are spent with her lovely friends, so truly any time with them is perfect to her.
1) Celebrity crush – Everyone had a celebrity crush from when they were little. Govil referenced Keira Knightley in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series as a pivotal one for her, and it stands true today.
