All careers are misunderstood to some degree. It doesn’t matter what the career of your dreams is, you will probably hear at least one stereotype about it.There are many popular misconceptions about the different jobs that exist out in the world.
In order to be a doctor, a person needs lots of brains and lots of college. So, if doctors are so smart and dedicated to their crafts, why are they known for having such bad handwriting? One would think that a doctor would be capable of picking up a pen and writing down a neat prescription, and they most definitely are. So why do they always seem to be writing in the messiest way possible?
According to a blog dedicated to Pediatric Dentistry, doctors prioritize: “This is not a conscious decision to confuse people, but an unintentional result of viewing other things as more important or urgent in the moment.” Doctors have more important things than penmanship to deal with that need their attention as soon as possible. They aren’t really worried about making sure every letter they write down is perfect (blogspot.com). Junior Ilana Levy’s father, who is a doctor himself, explained, “In general doctors have messy handwriting. This is mostly because they have had to write prescriptions and notes in a hurry.”
One popular career that is known to have a bad public image is accounting. Accountants are thought to be boring because they are obsessed with numbers. However, this talent with numbers is not necessarily a bad thing. Many people enjoy math. According to the California College San Diego blog, while many people associate accountants with being “BORRRRING,” this is not always the case. Every accountant is an individual person, with a personal life. In fact, some very famous and creative people started out in accounting. For example, Bob Newhart, who is a famous comedian and star of the Bob Newhart Show, used to spend his days adding and subtracting numbers. Another example is be Kenny G, a world-famous smooth jazz musician who worked as an accountant before his music career took off. Being good with numbers can also be associated with creativity (cc-sd.edu).
Another popularly stereotyped job is the firefighter. Some people are wary of a career in firefighting due to the danger involved. Firefighters tend to be perceived as heroic figures who save children from burning buildings. Yes, firefighters are known for saving lives and helping out the community, but they also make sure they are safe themselves before they start saving the lives of others. According to a blog written by Mr. Mike Deniger, who has been working in this field for 15 years, safety is always the number one concern for these heroes. “I am thankful for having great leadership in my department where safety is not only taught, it is trained on, and exercised,” he explained. Firefighters have to make sure they are as equipped as they can be before they put themselves in danger, and since firefighters are put into danger often, they are very careful with making sure they are safe (firefighternation.com).
There will always be popular misconceptions about different careers. Just remember that misconception means they are not entirely true. Do your own research and fight out what’s the truth and what’s not.
