Soccer Superstar Senior Ryan Kossmann kicked off his last season with a great start. With an average of 1.2 goals per game, about 1 assist per game, and being the leading goal scorer with 7 total goals so far this season, his streak doesn’t look like it’s bound to slow down anytime soon.
Kossmann’s main focus for the season is to win as many games as possible. He’s making this happen by both working hard and making memories throughout the season. According to him, one of his top memories this season has been scoring two goals against Kearny Mesa High School.
Scoring is a huge part of soccer, as scoring goals is the, well, end goal. “Ryans’s contribution has been crucial to the team by scoring over half of our goals and being lethal in the box,” said Senior Captain Silas Quirino. You need to be an overall active player on the field to be able to produce goals and gain success throughout the season.
Kossmann has been working hard outside of practice for the success he has received this season. “I have been practicing with Legends FC a couple times a week,” said Kossmann. He looks forward to getting better overall and also enjoys practicing on his own.
Kossmann has played with most of the players on this year’s team in previous years. “I’ve been playing with friends that I have known for a long time and used to play with when I was younger,” said Kossmann. By playing with friends from years before it has been easier for him to retain chemistry with his teammates.
Despite this, he’s still able to create chemistry between himself and younger teammates as well. “It is fun playing with Ryan, because he is able to score a lot of goals and is a big part of the team and its success,” said Freshman Novak Orlic.
Soccer is in no way a new sport for Kossmann, and is the only sport he has played and taken seriously. “I have been playing soccer for about 12 years. It keeps me in shape and it also keeps me active,” said Kossmann.
“It is great having Ryan on this team because he is a consistent player and pulls through when the game is tight,” said Quirino. It is important to be able to keep composure while under pressure in stressful situations during games and Kossmann has been able to do that exact thing.
“He definitely has driven new players not to be scared to take someone on one-on-one by displaying confidence going forward,” said Quirino. Confidence is needed to be able to do anything in sports, and having someone to look up to to gain confidence is greatly helpful.
Kossmann has been able to influence some of the younger teammates and incoming varsity players. “Ryan’s helped lots of underclassmen work on their skill sets and be able to move the ball up the field, and he makes the team successful by scoring lots of goals and also being able to assist our teammates to score,” said Orlic.
